He knows he didn't pull the trigger, and he knows the larger causes, skin color and womanhood and everything society finds useless. But between direct and overarching there is a quiet space where some blame lies for him.
If he'd gone pro instead of teaching. If they'd bought a house in the suburbs, not rented in the city. If they'd hired a babysitter, gone on a date like Alicia suggested instead of him staying home with Benjy, sending her out alone.
